Erykah Badu is the latest celeb to throw shade at Iggy Azalea. Badu, who hosted the Soul Train Awards, said “what you’re doing is definitely not rap,” in reference to Iggy Azalea.
Azalea previously had a battle with her supposed main man and producer, T. I. Azalea is hated on for a variety of reasons. I don’t like her because I don’t like anybody that spits ignorance. (So I don’t like a lot of people). The “Fancy” singer has been criticized a lot by the black community because of her appropriation of what is termed a “blaccent.”
If you weren’t aware, Iggy Azalea in real-life and Iggy on the mic sound nothing alike. It’s not just adding some extra uumph to sound hard or really go in. No, Iggy raps (or not… according to Badu) like she is pretending to be black. Honestly, she’s not the first and won’t be the last white person to try and appropriate black culture.
While I think her blaccent is stupid, I don’t find it blatantly racists. America is a melting pot and we borrow from other cultures that makes this country great. If we start saying only black people can do this or only white people can or only mexicans can… (fill in the blank), we will be robbing Americans of truly being Americans. While a lot of different people and races look different, there is a common thread of a blended of culture that is truly unique.
Back to Badu, it’s pretty common for award show hosts to poke fun at people. Matter fact, it’s pretty much the main part of their job, along with introducing people. But, did the joke go to far? I say no.
Badu pretended to take a phone call from Azalea saying:
“Who is this? Iggy Azalea? Yeah, hey! No, no, no, no, no, no, no! You can come,” she said. “‘Cause what you’re doing is definitely not rap.”
A lot of people laughed, some were shocked. My main thing is the joke isn’t actually funny. If you are going to throw shade, at least make me laugh in the process.
Whether or not Badu is trying to start something or just be funny isn’t known. Iggy has yet to respond, and Badu only response has been the following tweet to Azalea fan on twitter:
Is Badu funny or just rude?
