Roots aka Kunte Kinte is getting a remake and Nigerian born Hollywood actor, Hakeen Kae-Kazim, is taking up the iconic role of Samson in the groundbreaking work.
Hakeen Kae-Kazim’s character, Samson, in the original work had the responsibility of educating Kunte Kinte. Roots was one of the first ever works to portray American slavery.
Kunte Kinte was also one of the first black American movies that got syndicated as a series in almost all the countries in Africa. The series has a special place in black history as it gave us a better understanding of how far the black race have come through the eyes of Alex Haley.
British actor, Malachi Kirby will be taking up the role of the main character, Kunta Kinte. Rege-Jean Page will be appearing as Chicken George and Lawrence Fishburne will play the role of Alex Haley, the author of the original story.
Hakeem Kae-Kazim is a regular feature in African-based movies, and I have no doubt that he will produce another stellar performance in the remake of Kunte Kinte. Roots is currently being shot in New Orleans and South Africa.
I’m hopeful that the producers of the remake will maintain the core value of Kunte Kinte and not ruin the iconic movie all in a bid to make money.
The Kunte Kinte remake will be released in 2016.
