Johnny Depp has been named the most overpaid actor in Hollywood by Forbes magazine after experiencing a string of poor results in the box office.
Johnny Depp, who happens to be one of the highest-paid actors on the planet with estimated annual earnings of $30m (£20m), returned just a meager $1.20 for every $1 he was paid according to the financial magazine’s metric for 2015.
According to Forbes, the actor’s poor position is due to the financial failure of movies such as Mortdecai, Transcendence and The Lone Ranger, all of which flopped at the box office on the back of derisive reviews ( I love Mortdecai though).
The Lone Ranger was the biggest failure in the box office, with Disney estimated to have lost upwards of $150m on the western, but comedy Mortdecai pulled in just $47.4m at the global box office against a production budget of $60m alone. The sci-fi thriller Transcendence only just recouped its $100m production costs, with marketing and other expenses likely to have put the film well into the red.
Denzel Washington came in second place, as he only returned $6.50 for every $1 he earned. His hit movie “The Equalizer,” brought in $192.3 million on a $55 million budget.
