The question has been buzzing since the release of her music video, “I Don’t Belong to You.” In the video, Palmer begins in the bed of the man and ends the video at the house of a woman. I don’t know if that means she is trying define herself as bisexual, but I think that qualifies as getting around to say the least.
After the video was released Palmer say down with Xonecole to clear things up:
“I don’t belong to anyone else but myself. I have to make my own decisions. Happiness is defined by me. My sexuality is defined by me. And that can change and this can change and I can make it what I want to make it because I’m the one who makes that choice. So that’s what “I Don’t Belong to You,” is saying. This song feels right. It feels right and it’s telling who I am. And it captures my identity.”
Well Palmer answered the question, but didn’t really answer the question. If you are defining it, tell us what your definition is then?
She sticks by her claims that she won’t be defined by anything. Saying this to People:
“The video was to represent the young woman today – it’s not the traditional woman anymore – and not the specifics of ‘Am I gay? Am I straight? Am I bi?'” the Scream Queens actress told the magazine, “I’m making the rules for myself, and I don’t have to be stuck down to one label.”
I think if you don’t want to be stuck down a label, and you are quote on quote “free” that is a label in itself. Labels exist for a reason, but not the way people traditionally view them. Labels are not their to limit us, but only to explain to others how we live and we act.
I think Palmer is trying to express that her label (whatever it may be in regards to sexuality) is fluid, and it may not even be known by her (but that’s a story for another day). However she might choose to her life, I’m sure she will show the world when she is ready.
Honestly, I think the girl could probably do with some more privacy when it comes to her personal life and sexuality decisions, but when you put it in a music video (aka the public eye) you are asking for the questions.
