Many of us were dreading the day we would have to say “see you later” to Love and Hip Hop star Mendecees Harris, but it is here and we are just as sad as we thought we would be.
The 36-year-old husband of reality TV star, Yandy Smith, has been sentenced to serve 97 months in prison for drug trafficking.
According to prosecutors, Harris was involved in drug distribution from 2005 until 2012 and was part of a drug chain that distributed drugs in upstate NY.
So after a drawn out federal case, Harris, who pleaded guilty as charged in April, is now heading to a federal prison in Rochester for eight years.
The sentence was the lowest possible term under a plea agreement that included a maximum prison sentence of just over 10 years.
Harris’ attorney said the judge recognized the work Harris has been doing since his arrest to deter young people from crime. (good call on the community stuff Mendecees)
Sure enough, the shy music producer has been a major figure since we first met him as ‘Yandy’s baby daddy’ on the hit VH1 reality show.
The two co-stars have two children together as was televised during the show. Not only was Harris’ proposal to Smith televised as well, their wedding was also shown live on Memorial Day, May 25.
Mendecees has been free on a $600,000 bail in an agreement with prosecutors that allowed him to pay restitution with earnings and paid appearances. So it was just a matter of time before the inevitable.
Indeed, we have journeyed with the Harris clan for a while through their ordeal.
In a tweet posted on the VH1 website after the sentencing, Yandy Smith-Harris thanked followers for their support, stating,
“We finally have closure and are prepared and ready for all the future holds.”
Mendecees is expected to begin his prison sentence in four to six weeks. (We’ll miss you Mendecees.)
