Did he confess? Or was he being crazy sarcastic?
These are the questions viewers were left with after the Sunday finale of an intense six-part documentary on HBO, during which Robert Durst, after stepping away from an interview for a bathroom break, is heard muttering to himself,
“What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course” — apparently unaware that a microphone was still on.
The 71-year-old real estate heir and subject of HBO’s true crime documentary The Jinx, was officially charged Monday with one count of first-degree murder of his friend, Susan Berman with the special circumstances of murder of a witness, among other charges.
These charges carry the death penalty.
The Jinx director Andrew Jarecki told ABC television on Monday that he and his film crew were unaware of the apparent audiotape confession until discovering it while reviewing hours of recordings before notifying authorities.
“I sat there in the edit room with my partners and we just sort of shook our heads and it took a while to really understand the impact of it. It was so chilling to hear it,” Jarecki said.
The broadcast played a hand in re-opening Berman’s murder once turned cold-case and the disappearance of Durst’s wife in 1982.
