We loved The Wiz, now here comes The Passion!
NBC launched the current trend of live primetime musicals with The Wiz! Live earlier this month, and Fox is following suit with its own – The Passion (of the Christ, but the musical this time).
The two-hour musical event, which will air live from New Orleans in March will be hosted and narrated by New Orleans native Tyler Perry.
Now we know when Tyler Perry is involved, it’s usually filled with some remarkable talents, so we’ll see.
The modern day theme of The Passion will tell the story of the last hours of Jesus Christ as he presided over the Last Supper, was betrayed by Judas, put on trial by Pontius Pilate, convicted, crucified and resurrected.
The project features a cast of top entertainers performing popular tunes arranged by Glee and Rock of Ages music producer Adam Anders.
Executive producers include Allen Shapiro, Mike Mahan, and Mark Bracco of DCP, Jacco Doornbos of Eye2Eye Media, Adam Anders of Anders Media Inc. and David Grifhorst (The Passion: Netherlands).
The story will also feature a procession of hundreds of people carrying a 20-foot, illuminated cross from Champion Square outside the Superdome to the live stage at Woldenburg Park, which is on the banks of the Mississippi River. (sounds pretty dope!)
The project is based on a format originally created in the Netherlands by Eye2Eye Media’s Jacco Doornbos.
Fox Entertainment president David Madden seem to have already given the project two thumbs up, saying,
“The Passion is both wonderfully entertaining and genuinely inspirational.”
He added, “Tyler Perry is the perfect host to lead the cast and viewers through the streets of New Orleans in this contemporary re-telling of a timeless story.”
The Passion is coming to you live on March, 20, 2016 at 8pm!
